Bobtail Insurance for Truckers: When You Need It
What Is Bobtail Insurance?
Bobtail insurance — also called non-trucking liability (NTL) — provides liability coverage when an owner-operator is driving a tractor-trailer without a trailer attached and is not under dispatch. This is one of the most commonly overlooked gaps in commercial truck coverage.
When the Motor Carrier Policy Does NOT Cover You
When you sign a lease with a motor carrier, their primary liability policy covers you while under dispatch. Once dispatch ends, their policy terminates. If you then drive your bobtail to a fuel stop, your home, or a maintenance shop, you are completely uninsured for liability — unless you have a bobtail policy.
Bobtail vs. Non-Trucking Liability: Is There a Difference?
- Bobtail: Covers the tractor without a trailer, regardless of whether you are under dispatch.
- Non-Trucking Liability (NTL): Covers personal use of the truck when NOT under dispatch, with or without a trailer.
How Much Does Bobtail Insurance Cost?
Bobtail insurance is one of the most affordable commercial truck coverages: typically $35–$50 per month ($420–$600/year) for $1M liability limits.
